Variations, Teaching, Portuguese languageAbstract
There are many variations that occur in language, as are many factors that can determine these variations. However, by observing the teaching of Portuguese in our schools, we realize that the issue of language variation is generally not considered: the Portuguese language, the way it is taught, seems homogeneous and, when the topic of variation is discussed in manuals or in grammar books, there is only a mention of its existence, as shown in Ferreira (1992), whose chapter on "Understanding language variation" considers that "basic structures may vary due to several factors." But, he continues, "there is not a better way ('more correct') or a worse way ('more incorrect') to speak. This is only a differentiation that occurs on the basis of social criteria and also in situations of actual use of language." (Ferreira, 1992:40-51).
