In Brazilian Portuguese (BP), much has been said about the null direct object. The occurrence of the null indirect object, however, has not been studied – but the high incidence of these elements in BP was raised in Dillinger et al. (1996). In this study, the authors also raise the question of the syntactic status of "complement" of the indirect object, following Dillinger (1991) and Perini (1989), who "highlight the difficulty of distinguishing (by structural operations) the indirect object (PP complement) from the prepositional adverbial adjunct "(Dillinger et al. 1996: 317) and consider the hypotheses that this traditional distinction is naturally non-syntactical.
