This work deals with issues concerning linguistic variations, aiming at examining the alternation of the form of the personal pronoun of the first person plural – nós (we) – and the form of the collective noun – a gente (people) – based on data from the Portuguese Language spoken in Maranhão. It investigates the form a gente in the subsystem of personal pronouns – either in terms of subject, or in the role of complement or adjunct, pressing the forms nós (we) nos (us) and conosco (with us) – as in the subsystem of the possessives in competition with nosso/nossa (our).
