This article deals with the variable rule of /l/ before [ij] in the speech of 32 informants from the state of Pará Brasil. Geolinguistics and sociolinguistic variation are taken as the theoretical and methodological background of this paper. As the title suggests, preliminary results of the data from seven cities of the state of Pará will be presented and analyzed here. These preliminary results which are not conclusive point to a high frequency of palatalization of /l/ with respect to the linguistic and social variables taken into consideration. As for the geographical component, high frequencies of palatalization are noticed in points near the capital city Belém.
