This article analyses the realization of medial syllable coda /s/, based on the speech of eleven communities of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The analysis takes into account not only the data collected by means of the Phonetic Micro Atlas of the State of Rio de Janeiro - MicroAFERJ questionnaire but also spontaneous interviews which are part of the Atlas on the basis of the foundations of Variationist Sociolinguistics. Both types of analyses are compared and the complementary character of both analytical procedures is emphasised.
