As Ladefoged (1990) points out, phonetic transcription is not a consensual matter, due to the limits of the available tools for doing it. The problems that lay beyond this issue are increased in the case of spontaneous speech. Our aim, then, is to make some considerations on the difficulties that arise from the phonetic transcription during the elaboration of the Phonetic-Phonological Questionnaire (PPQ) that constitute Linguistic Atlas in Brazil. It is well known that conducting an acoustic analysis of all the data is almost impossible and, besides, a detailed transcription may be difficult for non-phoneticians to understand. On the other hand, some errors in the transcription may result in a misleading interpretation.
