The present article is a systematical study of two related phenomena concerning to phonetics and phonology, namely diphthong reduction and formation. Although it can be said that diphthongation and its reverse process can count on reasonable bibliography for the contemporary Brazilian Portuguese, the present work intends, nevertheless, to stop the gap on diachronic research about the phenomena. Based on 290 documents written throughout the XIXth Century by members of a black brotherhood, named Sociedade Protetora dos Desvalidos, first established in 1832, in the city of Salvador, Bahia, it aims at bringing new lights on the question.
