Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
  • In case Signum decides to publish your article, you agree to the Copyrights License terms adopted by the magazine.

Author Guidelines

Signum: Estudos da Linguagem - ISSN 2237-4846 (online) is a three-times-a-year publication edited by the Graduate Program in Language Studies of the State University of Londrina (UEL) and publishes papers and reviews in its area.

The originals must be submitted in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish. Papers should bring relevant contribution to the scientific knowledge concerning Language Studies. The reviews aims at evaluating and disseminating recently published books in our area (send, along with the review, a photo of the cover of the reviewed book).

The originals presented should not have been simultaneously published or submitted to another journal. The works must be submitted electronically, through complete registration of the author(s) at <http://www.uel.br/revistas/uel/index.php/signum/about/submissions#authorGuidelines>, according to the theme of each call.

- When submitting, the inclusion of all authors is mandatory.

- Each work can be written by three authors, maximum.

- It will only be accepted works submitted by PhDs, or, in case of co-authorship, by PhD students in partnership with a second author who already is a PhD. Texts submitted by the authors will be evaluated if the following criteria are respected:

1. Font: Times New Roman, size 11, spacing 1.0 between lines; When phonetic font is necessary, use only SilDoulosIPA;

2. It is mandatory to send the cover sheet separately, as an additional document, containing title, name of the author(s), information about their institutional affiliation, contact address and a brief biodata that includes: academic year and institution of Master or Doctorate;

3. The text should be submitted to publication without any AUTHORSHIP MARK. SEQUENCE OF THE PAPER: 1. English title, centered, uppercase and bold; 2. Title in foreign language (Portuguese); 3. Abstract in Portuguese (150-200 words), followed by 3 keywords separated by semicolon and two lines spaces below the text.

4. Abstract and keywords (separated by semicolon) in foreign language (English);

5. Subtitles in lowercase (first letter capitalized), bold and numbered in Arabic numeral. This numbering does not include Introduction, Conclusion or References;

6. Quotes: Times New Roman, size 10;

7. Footnotes at the bottom of the page, numbered according to the order of appearance. The call of the notes should appear in overwrite: Times New Roman, size 9;

8. Use italic instead of underlined;

9. To enter (tabulate) the text, use the tab key instead of the spacebar;

10. Enter 1 (one) time to mark a new paragraph;

11. Tables, figures and attachments should appear in a specific area chosen by the author(s). The tables, figures or attachments must not exceed the dimensions of the body text. In case of attachments from original texts already published, you should include the reference, as well as the permission of the editors for publication. Tables, graphics, figures and boards should be also sent in a separate file. The resolution of the figures should be minimum 300 dpi, jpg, png or tiff format. Avoid the landscape format;

12. Quotes in the body text of the paper should follow the alphabetical call system, according to the standard NBR 10520/ ABNT (august, 2002). Do not use idem, ibid., or ibidem, op cit;

13. Attachments should be placed before bibliographic references, preceded by the word “Attachment”, without tabulation, in lowercase (first letter capitalized), bold and below the end of the text;

14. The references should met the standard NBR 6023 / ABNT (August, 2002) and be listed at the end of the paper, in alphabetic order. The references standards can be accessed at <http://www.uel.br/bc/portal/arquivos/apostila-normalizacao.pdf>;

15. For reviews, the full reference is necessary. The allowed extension for reviews is a maximum of 2.000 (two thousand) words;

16. The allowed extension for papers is from  12 to 15 pages (from the introduction to the conclusion of the text);

17. The text should met the new orthography standards (For texts written in Portuguese).
