Abstract

The article, in the form of an essay, aims to problematize contemporary tragedy and catastrophe through a reflection on the history of the present time. The analysis considers the political, specifically the rise of far-right governments around the globe, with a recent example in republican Brazil, in relation to the transformative processes of the world of work. It discusses noxious (de)industrialization and, primarily, the environmental problem and the climate crisis, which has reached an even more terrifying proportion due to the denialist discourse of far-right governments themselves. Our hypothesis is that there is an intrinsic relationship between the growth of far-right ideologies and the new market configurations, alongside a tragic worldview that seems to already assume the irreversibility of the world’s end in the face of the climate emergency. Will we be able to “postpone the end of the world,” to paraphrase the indigenous philosopher Aílton Krenak (2019)?
