The appreciation of Portugal proposed by Eça de Queirós when publishing the novel A ilustre casa de Ramires in the pages of the Revista Moderna is the approach of this research. When analyzing the novel within the magazine, we can also see that there are historical perspectives that complement and distance each other. As we observe the opposition between the main characters of this novel, we can also understand the differences between Portugal’s past and present in the Queirosian view. When writing a historical novel, within a historical novel, perhaps, Eça wants to show Portugal at the end of the 19th century that being stuck in the past, praising a glory that will never resurface, could not help his country to rebuild itself. For Eça, it is necessary for men to look to the past, with the intention of building a new History and yes, that they decide through this construction, to change the present and to project a better future.Downloads
