Telemedicine is an emerging field in the patient-physician relationship and in health care organization, It exploits technologies for remote clinical testing and for recording personal data and environmental information from distributed monitoring stations located in the patient's dwelling. Disabled, frail elderly with polypathology may benefit from telemedicine by gaining anew route of access to social and health services to which they might otherwise be barred due to inaccessibility (handcaps), excessive costs, and long delivery times. The Geriatric Assessment Unit of the University of Modena — Italy, in collaboration with family physicians and local administrators, has activated a telemedicine program as part of an integrated home care program, targeted to equate its patient acceptability and impact on social customs and self-sufficiency.
