Prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus Type I in school and under school of city Londrina

Abstract

Not before late 80s was the prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus known among us. A multi-center survey was then carried out to find out the prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus in Brazil and detected that 7,5% of the population, aged 30 to 69 have DM. The main focus of this present research, however, was not to differentiate the prevalence of DM Type I from insulin-dependent subjects of DM Type II or from insulin independent subjects. The objective of this research was the identification of the prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus Insulin Dependents (Type I) in students and pre-schoolers in the Municipality of Londrina. The methodology used in the research was a cross-study or prevalence research. The referential population was the population of Londrina and the target population was pre-schoolers and students up to 14 years. Subjects' participation was voluntary and volunteers were asked to answer a standard questionnaire from the Ministry of Health. The results provided for an epidemiological profile of Diabetes Mellitus Type I in the City of Londrina. The prevalence among children attending private schools is twice the number of those attending public schools and four times that of the Municipality. There was no difference between girls and boys. The prevalence of diabetes among white children was two and a half that of non-white children. As for pre-schoolers attending nursery schools in the city, no rate of diabetes was identified. The average prevalence of DM Type I found in Londrina was 2,3/10.000. The rate detected by the research is close to that in literature about countries neighbouring the equator line.
