The present study aims to identify the functions executed by nurses on their first job, their expectations and perceptions concerning professional practice. The results shoe that their expectations were met in their great majority and that the perceptions towards professional practice were nor very encouraging, due to role indefinition in the health team, lack of a greater autonomy with nursing care valorization and better work conditions. The nurses showed a certain coherency on distributing time for developing the functions of the position.
