Considering that the diabetic patient’s physiological and medical instructions are main factors for an adequate control of the disease, a staff, consisting of physicians, nurses, a psychologist and a social assistant, was established in 1984 as an ambulatorial assistance program for the diabetic patients at the Hospital Universitário Regional do Norte do Parana in Londrina, PR. Through the analysis of the results obtained during the three years of the program, the staff reformulated an assistance methodology, aimed toward the patient's active involvement, which is the fundamental condition to achieve his high potential for health care.
