Abstract

One of the required criteria for the successful completion of a specialization course in Brazil is the production of a monograph. It implies that the student can apply the cumulated knowledge and abilities acquired in the course work. However, many problems arise when the students have diverse background (graduation) and/or have not had adequate training in research techniques. For these hetero students the content of the specialization course does not really cumulate. For those other whose background is akin to the specialization topic (homo students) lack of research abilities hinders the production of an acceptable monograph. The short duration of a specialization course (360 hours) dispersed among ten or more different "disciplines" can hardly provide any cumulation leading to a serious research paper. Here, these problems are discussed and alternatives for the monograph are suggested.
