Abstract

It can be said that the doctoral thesis represents a serious research effort. Nevertheless, in Brasil it has been a focus of few studies. In this work it was attempted to identify some of its various facets. 28 professors of the Universidade Estadual de Londrina were chosen as sources of information about their doctoral theses. Information was gathered on such facets as: (a) Professional data; (b) Choice of topic; (c) Developing research abilities; (d) Contact with Committee; (e) Time; (f) Criteria for theses; (g) Value of the thesis; and (h) Necessity for theses. Although of an exploratory nature the study yielded 16 conclusions that may prove useful to future doctoral students, as well as to planners of doctoral programs in universities.
