Nowadays, in the attempt to complement anesthetic patient monitoring, clinical variables analyzes and electrophysiologic techniques are being used. However it is difficult to obtain determinant and uniform information about anesthetic plans for all types of anesthetic agents. Consequently, a monitor of anesthetic depth known as bispectral index (BIS) has been developed through multiple studies and technical advances. Therefor, this review aimed to provide information about the BIS in dogs. Additionally, considerations related to its development, function and proper manipulation were made, and also behavior aspects of this parameter when applied in different anesthetics.
