Abstract

Compositive weight is a term used in the visual arts to determine relations of balance, tension and harmony in a composition. Just as in the arts, where artists master the weight factors of each element due to visual perception, these same factors can be used as a tool for the graphic designer. The present research aims to identify and describe the way in which weight can be attributed to visual elements of graphic designs in order to guide visual reading. The elements investigated are based on the foundations of psychology described by Arnheim (2016), correlating art and design. Seven design images were selected, providing composition weight through: color, location, size, spatial depth, intrinsic details, isolation and configuration, characterizing a qualitative exploratory research. The results show that the weights applied contribute to the perception of information, demonstrating that elements of the visual arts are used to advantage in graphic design.
