Human rights and economic development: the quest for balance in human dignity and modern capitalism

Over the centuries, the international market has undergone several changes, which have gradually required the sacrifice of social welfare in favor of wealth accumulation, placing human values in the background and capital in the forefront. In this context, this paper utilizes the hypothetical-deductive method and a legal-economic interpretation of market systems in order to highlight the importance of human dignity in face of the many violations of social rights. Therefore, this study strives to find common ground between human rights and economic values. In conclusion, this research undertands that the dignity of the human person should be guaranteed in market transactions, as it is an important instrument for improving quality of life in undeveloped countries, especially in Brazil.
