Abstract

Objective: To study the applicability of the FAIR and FDOF principles to digital Objects of Culture, Memory and Heritage (OCs). Methodology: Conceptualizations, descriptions and definitions of OCs were collected from the literature and used as sources. To identify the requirements for a digital OC to be a FAIR object, the reference documents of the FAIR Digital Object Framework Documentation were used as a basis. Requirements that indicated proximity to the FAIR principles and the FDOF were used as evaluation criteria. Digital OCs from important institutions of Culture, Memory and Heritage worldwide were evaluated based on the requirements identified. Results: The digital OCs examined practically meet the FDOF requirements. Conclusions: Individual institutions of Culture, Memory and Heritage would have to make little effort to comply with the FDOF requirements; current standards and technologies would meet these requirements. However, there is a need to develop a common technological infrastructure that could support the compatibility of digital OCs with the FDOF.
