Terminological analysis on narcotics trafficking crimes

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this research is to collect and select terms related to narcotics crimes within the scope of the Brazilian Federal Police.
Methodology: The research is characterized as exploratory, documentary research and a case study in terms of its objectives. Four methodological stages were defined: Survey of terms in correlated controlled vocabularies, Mining of terms in official PF documents, Validation and expansion of terms with experts and Consolidation of the terminological survey.
Results: Results 90 relevant terms were identified in correlated Knowledge Organization Systems analyzed. Text mining analyzed approximately 140,000 formal Federal Police documents, resulting en 151 terms related to the topic. At the end of the steps, 210 terms and their synonyms were consolidated.
Conclusions: This research is a first step in the terminology survey that will culminate in a more robust controlled vocabulary. Direct interaction with experts in the field enriched the terminological repertoire and solidified the importance of validating the terms.
