Abstract

Objective: This paper analyzes the role played by these bots in maintaining the quality and organization of content, comparing the Portuguese and English Wikipedia projects.
Method: The research adopts a quantitative and descriptive approach, using data collected from the most accessed pages between August 2019 and August 2020. The information was obtained through the Toolforge and Xtools platforms, considering the volume of manual and automated edits.
Results: The results reveal an incipient use of bots as a governance instrument, with manual edits predominating in both projects. However, a greater intensity and presence of bots were observed in the English project, while in the Portuguese project their operation is more limited and focused on operational activities, such as reference correction and link updates.
Conclusions: Although bots play a relevant role in organizing and optimizing informational flows, there is a long way to go for their more effective use in algorithmic governance. The study further highlights the need for technological advancements and greater integration between human and automated interventions to ensure efficiency in managing collaborative platforms.
