Abstract

Introduction: In 1929, McDevitt already reported that major changes would occur in libraries, and the problems they would face would be more related to financial resources than technology itself. This has not turned out to be the great barrier of libraries, and it is the changes and advances of technology that jeopardize the survival of the traditional library. Objective: The paper proposes to present ideas from librarians and information science authors about the library of the future and the technological and social changes that these would suffer in the following years. Methodology: Literature review covering the period from 1945 to 2003. Results: The research reveals that the central literature around libraries refers to the transition from physical to digital, and the whole process that libraries should pass in financial terms, from personnel and technologies, as well as possible barriers and limitations to this transition. Conclusions: It is concluded that even with all the expected potential for the development of the digital library, the transition movement did not happen as fast or in the same proportion as the authors imagined and that the transition is not yet complete.
