Abstract

Introduction: Classification theory has been used as a foundation for the understanding of knowledge organization systems. Thus, it is important to analyze and understand how the classification studies are configured in the Brazilian information science, analyzing its institutionalization. Objectives: a) to identify the authors with the most consolidated presence at ENANCIB meetings; b) to verify the relations between the citing authors and their theoretical-bibliographic references; c) to identify the most recurrent terms used and their relation to content from other areas or other sub-fields of information science. Methodology: The papers published by GT-2 in the proceedings of ENANCIB, in the period 2003 to 2014 (n = 350), were analyzed. As a search strategy, it was used the verification of the occurrence of the truncated expression "classif *" in titles and keywords. Thus, 42 articles were selected for the composition of the corpus of analysis, from which the sample was composed of 21 papers that were published by the five most productive researchers. The bibliographic references used by this group was also analyzed, building the citation network. Results: It was verified that there is a strong and active elite regarding the development of the "classification" theme in GT-2. Half of the works identified as related to this theme were produced by the five elite authors. It was observed, both in the analysis of the theoretical-bibliographic basis and in the analysis of the keywords used, that the study of the theory of faceted classification arouses interests, and Ranganathan is the theorist most quoted by the most productive authors. It is a phenomenon that cannot effectively be called a trend, considering the longevity of this type of interest. Final observations: This "renewed" interest, however, is certainly associated with the contributions that the faceted approach can offer to the treatment of digital information in line with other tools, such as, for example, ontologies.
