The thematic treatment of information in electronic scientific journals in library and science information

Abstract

Introduction: To facilitate the assignment of keywords in a subject, first, should select from a natural language a restricted set of words and phrases. Second, according as treats these terms semantically to correct their referents and establish their relationship with other terms, it is necessary to use a language which reliably represents the informational content recorded in the support; such language portrays the content for retrieval purposes.
Objective: To analyze the languages and documentary instruments adopted to assign the keywords to the thematic organization of information from electronic journals in the field of Library and Information Science.
Methodology: The methodological strategy of the research can be considered as a descriptive study having a qualitative and quantitative approach. It was used the documental technique analysis and as support instruments the electronic questionnaire and structured form were utilized for the data collection. The number of elements of the study population consisted of 35 electronic journals, with 18 national titles and 17 international titles (nine titles of Spanish-language, seven titles of English-language and one title of French language).Of the 35 electronic questionnaires sent, totaled 22 returns, with 15 titles national and seven titles international.
Results: The results of the analysis of keyword metadata demonstrate that electronic journals national and international use the free language of the author to assign keywords to magazine articles. The documentaries instruments most used by journals surveyed are the Electronic Thesaurus, followed of the Lists of Subject Headings. These tools are used to help authors to assign keywords to magazine articles and to assist publishers to standardize the terms assigned by the authors.
Conclusion: It was concluded that the publishers of electronic scientific journals acknowledge the importance of the keywords in retrieving information. However, it is believed that it is necessary the adoption of some form of standardization of these elements
