The Dynamics of Brazil's Air Transport in South America: perspectives on integration

Abstract

Regional integration in South America is marked by advances, setbacks, and institutional reconfigurations. In this context, air transport constitutes a strategic element, being one of the key factors responsible for territorial circulation and the intensification of people flows. This article analyzes the contribution of this sector to such integration, focusing on Brazil. It is based on the hypothesis that the air sector is a strategic vector for strengthening connections among South American countries, promoting greater economic, political, and social cohesion. The research uses data from the National Civil Aviation Agency on international routes, number of flights, and passengers, taking into account the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic during the analyzed period. The approach shows that South America is Brazil’s main international destination, highlighting the role of Brazilian airlines which, through their strategies, contribute to expanding regional connectivity. Thus, the role of air transport in South America’s regional integration demonstrates that air flows both reflect and shape the integration dynamics on the continent, and despite structural and regulatory challenges, it is fundamental in promoting a denser and more resilient integration by expanding flows and connecting the continent’s strategic urban centers.
