Abstract

This article offers a brief overview of the first experiences of mechanical reproduction processes engendered by photography that contributed to the wide dissemination of a printed visual culture, in a process integrated with the already consolidated forms of reproducibility of images, such as engraving. Our objectives are also to present the profile of current material sources in museums and archives that can broaden the field of research on reproducibility and its social impacts and how photomechanical processes have been treated by the recent historiography of visual culture.
