Abstract

This paper analyzes the representation ofNativeAmericans in thewestern film. This genre emerges in the first half of the 20 th century, with stories generally set between 1860 and 1890, period of the destruction of Native American culture. Several western films reproduce a worldview based on ethnocentrism and the conservative ideology, depicting Native Americans as an obstacle for territorial conquest, as savage and uncivilized beings, an inconvenient minority that blocks the expression of a nation in progress. Hence, films from four American directors – Ford, Sturge, Eastwood and Peckinpah – will be carefully studied in order to confirm whether these movies had contributed for the construction of a central stereotype in the American mythology, the portray of Native Americans as merciless savages.
