Masculinity as a category of analysis for cemetery research: male nudity in São Paulo funerary art

We discuss the relevance of the use of the concept of masculinity as a category of analysis for cemeterial research, having as compass the emerging aspects of the doctoring investigation done along with the PPGH/UFG, under the supervising of Profª Dra. Maria Elizia Borges. We investigate the male nudity in funerary art from the city of São Paulo, in the period of the First Republic, examining the collections of the Cemetery of Consolação, in São Paulo/ SP. Starting from the inventory of occurring male images, partially or completely nude, we noted that these employ representations that may highlight the sensibilities towards death, or the virility associated with the work world; options not always in consonance with the bourgeois morals and the ideal of masculinity from that time period. The comprehension of different representations of masculinity is necessary for the reading of the various uses of male nude in the funerary collection that we approach.References
