Abstract

This article, which opens the thematic dossier History of Images and Gender Relations, addresses a central question: can an image prompt us to think about gender? Through the analysis of the representation of Jesus Christ created by Salustiano García for the 2024 Holy Week poster in Serville, we argue that images do not merely reflect or represent, but also actively produce gender. Based on theoretical frameworks from gender studies, art history, and the history of images, we seek to demonstrate how an image – whose reception sparked intense public and media controversy – can, even while drawing on established iconographic conventions, disrupt and subvert visual norms associated with the masculinity of Christ.
