Las dos dimensiones de la teoría de la historia de David Hume

El presente artículo señala la existencia de dos dimensiones complementarias, pero distintas, de la historia en el pensamiento del filósofo e historiador escocés del siglo XVIII David Hume. La primera abarca la comprensión de la historia como una forma de conocimiento imparcial, justificado y sistemáticamente organizado sobre el pasado, cuyos procedimientos y técnicas fueron ampliamente teorizados por Hume a lo largo de su carrera. La segunda es la historia como proceso histórico, es decir, como una totalidad que abarca todos los eventos y agentes del pasado. Esta estaría dotada de un patrón organizador y de un sentido que, una vez desvelado y explicado, permitiría al historiador cierto grado de especulación y proyección hacia el futuro. En la construcción del análisis se hacen referencias a las principales consideraciones sobre la historia en obras de Hume producidas entre mediados de la década de 1730 y principios de los años 1760. Entre los textos privilegiados en nuestro examen se destacan el Tratado de la naturaleza humana, algunos de los Ensayos, las dos Investigaciones y la Historia de Inglaterra.
