Turismo religioso y extinción del bosque de cedros del Líbano en informes de misioneros protestantes en Medio Oriente

Resumen

Este artículo, desde la perspectiva de la historia ambiental, busca demostrar cómo el turismo religioso, en el siglo XIX, se convirtió en uno de los factores que contribuyeron a la devastación de los cedros del Monte Líbano y establecer la conexión entre el literalismo bíblico y la defensa de preservación forestal de cedros nativos en peligro de extinción, según informes de viajeros y peregrinos de la época. Finalmente, pretendemos responder a la siguiente pregunta: ¿por qué algunos pasajes bíblicos sobre la naturaleza del bosque de cedros en el Monte Líbano, lugar sagrado de peregrinación para los cristianos, fueron cuestionados por la ciencia? Para esclarecer esta investigación se consultaron diarios de viajeros naturalistas, informes de misioneros protestantes en Siria y prensa.
