In 1862, the province of Ceará was struck by a cholera epidemic. The health crisis caused the death of approximately twelve thousand people. In this study, we aim to show how the health crisis affected the daily lives, penitential practices, and funeral rites of the affected localities. To achieve our goal, we will analyze a set of documents from the period, with a focus on letters written by priests, texts published in the press, parish death records, documents issued by the provincial government, and a report written by a doctor who worked to provide relief to the districts of Crato and Jardim, in the Cariri region.
