The other’s exhibition: Tradition, memory and coloniality in Mexican museums

This article starts from the notion of "exhibitionary complex" on the classical pedagogic function of the western museum (historical and ethnographic) and goes over them through contemporary Latin American contexts, specifically Mexican. The text contrasts an ethnographic cut in community museums with certain aspects of the ethnographical halls in the National Museum of Anthropology of Mexico. The central thesis, which it aims to demonstrate, is that the present rhetoric of heritage in post-colonial and "cultural diversity" entourages still uses the logic of the exhibitionary complex but with a different mechanism and goal from the classical notion from the beginning of the 20th century. It does no longer tries to exhibit the achievements of modern order or national establishment, but rather a rhetoric of return. Tradition would no longer forever fixed in the national museum of the capital city, but now installs itself in the distant space of the town or village: what used to be objects of the museum and exhibition, become subjects which produce a glance and an order. Lastly, he questions: have the mechanisms that defined and retained the cultural authority over patrimony been truly displaced?References
