In the social practice of large social groups, memories are constructed out of specific experiences. These memories fulfill two key functions. One is as a group cohesion that defines and us versus them, a type of behavior understood as correct, and a cultural perception understood to be “class based”. Second these memories are the primary material that permits the continuity of struggles and activities of the group as such. Beyond each struggle’s result, they prefigure and contribute to future conflicts. This piece examines the contrasting memories between what might be termed “official” perspectives and those constructed by five workers based on their remembrances of the 1976-1983 Argentine dictatorship.Downloads
