Resumo

Adriano visitou Londinium em 122 EC, possível primeira parada de sua expeditio Britannica à província da Britannia. Segundo as fontes, escassas, buscava apaziguar os ânimos ou reestabelecer, pela força, a ordem na ilha, onde havia sinais de descontentamento. Seu maior feito durante a missão foi o da construção da muralha que hoje leva seu nome, obstáculo que visaria separar romanos de bárbaros. Mas não conhecemos bem qual foi a demanda que o fez ir até lá e o cenário que encontrou em Londinium. Adriano pode ter procurado debelar uma grande revolta ou apenas criar o limes mais setentrional do império, mas sua saída, no mesmo ano, também pode ter desencadeado o aumento da tensão entre britões e romanos, a ponto de causar, pouco tempo depois, a eclosão de uma possível rebelião desastrosa para Londinium, na forma de um incêndio. Os efeitos de tais transformações podem ser visualizados na estratigrafia das escavações e, também, na “paisagem” das práticas mortuárias nos limites da cidade. Por meio de autores que se debruçaram sobre essas conexões e relatórios de escavações sobre Londinium, pretendo relatar conflitos observáveis nas práticas mortuárias, e trazer propostas ao seguimento dos estudos sobre a presença romana na Britannia.
