Abstract

Fruit growing currently presents the challenge of producing food in a sustainable manner, taking care of the health of consumers and the environment and ensuring the provision of ecosystem services. Assessing system performance can be difficult and expensive. The Ecosystem Integrity Index (IIE) is a qualitative-quantitative tool that is easy to apply and useful for evaluating and managing systems. The objective of the work was to generate information for the validation of the use of the IIE in fruit growing through its application in apple trees. The results showed coherence between the IIE values and the field observations. The IIE is a tool with good potential to evaluate the performance of systems, identify critical points and relate values to key aspects of ecosystem functioning.
