Abstract

The researches based on Varsul speech data have pointed out that the rhotic variable is conditioned mainly by geographic group and syllable position. In all these works it is observed the presence of front variants in onset and coda position. The present work proposes to delineate the results of these researches and examine the possibility of comparing and generalizing their results. Methodological questions, based on the variationist model, are considered so that the effect of methods on results may be examined and consequently regularities and tendencies may be extracted from the results.

Possui graduação em Letras Tradutor Intérprete pela Faculdade Ibero Americana de Letras e Ciências Humanas (1992), mestrado em Lingüística pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (1996) e doutorado em Lingüística e Letras pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (2002). Atualmente é professor titular da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul.

Valéria Neto de Oliveira Monaretto, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul

Possui doutorado em Lingüística e Letras pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (1997). Atua na graduação e na pós-graduação do Instituto de Letras da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, desde 1995. Lidera o Grupo de Pesquisa VARSUL/UFRGS (Variação Lingüística Urbana no Sul do Brasil, desde 2005.
