The objective of this study is, through a bibliographic research, to show the use and the indications of caries detector. Caries Detector indicate the differently desmineralized dentin coat superficial and intem (still vital and physiologically remineralized), than guiding the professional in the cavity preparation to keep the health structure as much as possible without leaving residual caried tissue, what is not guaranteed though the clinical examination (sound and mirror) that is cOl1sidered very subjective. However, researches show the use of caries detector just as a "auxiliary way" in the remove of carious lesions, because they proved the existence of microorganism in cavities where the dentin is not colored. The dye used is basic fuchsin (CzoHzoH3Cl) in 0,5% ar red acid (C27H Z907NzSzNa) in.1% both in propyleneglycol ( alcoholic solvent) that penetrate though Il1e deteriorate collagens fibers carrying the dye. There are two procedures that can be used, each one with his specifications. The first is used in strickle cavitiy before the begining o( lhe preparatiol1, making it easy, and the second is used in deep cavity to detect residual caried dentin Beyond that it is necessary to observe and follow with a lot of critery the application of the product to avoid a wrong caries diagnostic. Therefore, the caries detector is a auxiliar way, that comes to make easy the process of detection and removal of caried tissue, but it must not be used as a objective way and totally secure, because it is still necessary the use o( others tecniques (clinical examination observation of the color and hardness of the dentin) to try to assure a correct cavity preparation.
