Abstract

The authors compared the results obtained using 5 different commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and the Western Blot (WB) method for anti-Human T lymphotropic virus type I (HTL V I) serological diagnosis. Among the serum samples assayed at the Immunology Service of the ClinicaI Laboratory of Hospital Universitário Regional do Norte do Paraná, from april 1994 to june 1995, 30 samples repeatedly reactive to at least one ELISA for anti-HTLV-I antibodies determination were assayed by WB. Comparative analysis of the results obtained with the 5 commercial ELISA showed that all 4 samples (100.0%) that were positive by WB showed agreement with the ELISA results. Of 19 samples with indeterminate results by WB, 12 (63.0%) did not agree with at least one ELISA result, and of 7 samples (100.0%) with negative results by WB, 6 samples (86,0%) showed at least one reactive result in the ELISA, confirming that the ELISA is a screening assay with high sensitivity but low specificity, showing a large numberoffalse-positive results. The dates obtained did not show relationship among the test absorbance values of the different commercial kits compared amongst themselves and with the WB results and there is a considerable difference in the sensitivity and specificity of the commercial available kits.
