Abstract

Bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1) is recognized a major pathogen in young and adults bovines. After the first infection, the viral latency induces the animals of the carrier state and possible transmitters due to its viral reexcretion episodes. This BHV-1 biological characteristics is responsible for the maintenance and expansion of the infections which composes the Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) and Infectious pustular vulvovaginitis (IPV) complex. In the dependency, among other factors, of the viral subtype may determine respiratory, reproductive, nervous and systemic signals. Despite of being identified in the 60s in Brazil, only recently BHV-1 infections were diagnosed in a routine, by serologic techniques. In the present cattle raising system, low levels of reproduction on bovine herd may be responsible for impossibility of the production. Therefore, the infections that undertake the reproductive scale assume a vast sanitary importance. This review has as objective to present and make comments on some topics related to etiologic agent, clinic signal symptoms, diagnosis, control and prophylaxis of BHV-1 infection that undertake the breeding reproduction on bovines.
