Urinary and plasmatic parameters for evaluation of kidney function in Girolanda heifers raised in Itaguaí District (RJ).

Abstract

Thirteen clinicaly healthy heifers with ages ranging from 20 to 45 months old, raised in Rio de Janeiro State were utilized in this work. Samples of total blood and urina were colected from each animal. It was determined the normal values to the urinary osmolality, the plasmatic osmolality, the urinary density, and the urinary osmolality/plasmatic osmolality ratio. It also verified the interrelation between these parameters, and their importance to the kidney function evaluation. The observed normal values were X +/- SD and (limits): urinary osmolality 665 +/- 260 (171 to 1060) mOsm/kg, plasmatic osmolality 289 +/- 9 (277 to 314) mOSm/kg, urinary density 1030 +/- 11 (1008 to 1048), and urinary osmolality/plasmatic osmolality ratio 2,20 +/- 0,88 (0,604 to 3,593). The urinary osmolality and the urinary osmolality/plasmatic osmolality ratio were considered the most important data to the kidney function evaluation, compared to the plasmatic osmolality or urinary density results.
