Contributions of Information Science for the use of the international classification of diseases

Objective: The objective is to explore the uses of the ICD by healthcare professionals in the Brazilian context, as well as to present potential contributions of Information Science for the better use of the ICD.
Methodology: A quantitative and exploratory opinion survey was conducted, with anonymized data collection.
Results: The findings reveal that while most participants possess some level of familiarity with the ICD, few have mastered its full range of functionalities and applications. A significant number of professionals reported never having used the classification, and considerable gaps in training and formal education related to its use were identified.
Conclusions: Inadequate education and insufficient training of health professionals for the use of the ICD were observed. To mitigate this gap, it is essential to develop disciplines, courses, events, and explanatory materials on the ICD that are integrated into undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education curricula in the health field.
