Abstract

Objective: To investigate the different uses of the public library space and the opportunities it offers to its real and potential users.
Methodology: Based on the analysis of case studies promoted by researchers from different areas of knowledge, it reflects, in an exploratory perspective, on the appropriations of space by users of public libraries.
Results: Public libraries have been frequented by people without permanent residence in search of shelter, members of the community who need a place for study, work and leisure and by those who do not face economic or social problems, but who seek professional mediators for a diversity of resources and services.
Conclusions: While the library expands its attractions and conquers a heterogeneous public, the encounter and the coexistence between people of different origins and needs create challenges for the shared use of space. Thus, new studies should consider these limitations when discussing the division of the public library into sectors, the supply of furniture, the presence of qualified professionals, among other characteristics that aim to consolidate the library as a public space.
