Abstract

This paper presents the morpholithologic mapping of the municipality of Manoel Viana  located in the western state of Rio Grande do Sul - Brazil. Through the survey of existing data and field work and with the aid of GIS techniques and remote sensing, was developed morpholithologic zoning of the municipality. This zoning took into account the relief characteristics of the area as well as the spatial distribution of lithologies. In general, the relief of the municipality is marked by the existence of two levels separated by dissecting a degree of slopes of 20 to 40m in  level around of the 180metros.The lithologic sequences are associated with the final events of the Paraná Basin characterized by the formation Guará, Botucatu Formation and the Serra Geral Formation and  recent deposits. Thus were set morpholithologic six units as: hills of the altitude, association of hills and buttes, sandstone hills, volcanic hills, isolated buttes and ramps of the fund valley. Therefore, this article is linked to the contribution that studies issues of zoning and mapping are tools that can be used to make decisions about the conscious use of space, minimizing actions that degrade the environment, thus seeking a sustainable development.
