Além de serem os pólos do transporte aéreo, os aeroportos são importantes pólos geradores de tráfego terrestre. No que concerne ao deslocamento de pessoas, não se trata apenas dos passageiros dos aviões, que complementam sua viagem, por terra, até seu local de destino (ou, inversamente, provém de seu local de origem). Também integram o fluxo os acompanhantes dos passageiros aéreos, os visitantes e, sobretudo, os numerosos funcionários do aeroporto e instalações anexas.
