Embora a história dos mapas seja antiga, o desenvolvimento da cartografia teórica é relativamente novo na Cartografia como ciência. Um dos motivos para o desenvolvimento tardio é que a pesquisa sempre tendeu a enfocar mais os fatores técnicos, especialmente os elementos artísticos do mapa. Neste artigo procuramos apresentar as principais correntes da cartografia teórica e seus reflexos na pesquisa brasileira.
