The COVID-19 Pandemic and Its Economic and Social Impacts in Latin America and the Caribbean (2020-2022): An Analysis Based on ECLAC Publications

Abstract

The start of the new coronavirus pandemic, in March 2020, brought a series of consequences for world economies, resulting in an economic and social crisis of large proportions. For the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, which are in a more vulnerable position, it generated numerous impacts, affecting, above all, the less favored groups. That said, this article sought to review the crisis caused by the coronavirus, in the period 2020-2022, with the aim of discussing how it affected these countries. To this end, some documents produced by CEPAL and published in the Covid Observatory and other bibliographies that discussed the topic were analyzed, following the same perspective. The results obtained from the study revealed how this crisis negatively affected the dynamism of this region, generating a worsening in the analyzed indices. In view of this, strategic action by the State becomes necessary, through planning and redirection of investments, fiscal policy etc.
