Photography in Latin American cultural magazines: the experiences of S. Paulo (Brazil, 1936) and Rotofoto (Mexico, 1938) magazines

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present a comparison between two cultural magazines that had a short life in the 1930s in their respective countries. A point in common is that both used photography as a central element in its communication structure. Discuss the magazine São Paulo, published in Brazil in 1936, against Rotofoto magazine published Mexico only during 1938. This research falls within a broader project in which I reflect with the movement of cultural ideas and policies between Mexico and Brazil in the first half of the twentieth century. I seek in particular to examine whether common visual repertoires formed between the two countries, both in the production of images loaded with rhetoric of political engagement and contributed to the construction of the Latin American political imagination.
