Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to discuss and meditate over the caricature of the periodical press and show its potential as a source in historiographic practice. That is, availing ourselves of diverse perspectives of analysis, we will use the cartoons as a source and as an instrument of study for knowledge and interpretation of the past. In this regard, we will enter the territory of political, social and cultural history to think over different times and processes from the public sphere and its actors in Mexico in the 19th and 20th centuries. We will base our exposition in the review of two studies, through which we will show how the dynamics of Government life overlap, the participation of the social sectors, the consequences of industrialization and capitalism, the training, continuities and ideological changes, all fields in which it is possible to experience the historical research through the use of the cartoons.
